A New Discovery (ii). 'Some of the finds have the appearance of vessels but their purpose remains a mystery....'

This is an original sculpture comprising of a nest of four fragile handmade paper vessels. I made the paper using pages from very old books and added inclusions of antique and vintage lace. The paper is created to reveal tiny fragments of letters. The small textile vessel is made entirely out of lace net from an antique wedding veil. Both the nest of vessels and the small vessel are mounted on antique wooden bobbins and displayed within a handmade glass dome.

At the base of the dome are scattered some of the delicate skeleton hydrangea petals, that Clara found under the hydrangea bushes in Cordelia's beautiful walled garden.

Clara told me that this group of delicate artefacts is Hester's favourite, but that she herself always found it difficult to choose between the collections. She claimed that they all had individual virtues of their own, but she did confess to having particularly enjoyed attending to the conservation of this group.

Next year, Professor Knight intends to lend this and a selection of the other display cases to the Keeper of the Ashmolean Museum, but until then it will be on display in his library.

Please note this is a delicate one off piece of sculpture and cannot be re-created.
